Lowcountry Connections Academy offers flexible learning option

With enrollment underway for the 2026-27 school year, Lowcountry Connections Academy is continuing to grow its presence as a statewide option for students seeking a more flexible approach to education.

The tuition-free public charter school, which serves more than 1,200 students across South Carolina, offers a fully online learning model designed to meet a wide range of student needs, from accelerated learners to those seeking an alternative path to graduation.

“We noticed that we were getting a lot of students who needed an alternative path to graduation,” said Jen Prince, assistant principal. “They were off cohort.”

Since opening in 2020, the school has drawn students from across the state, despite its Lowcountry name.

“The Lowcountry Connections Academy name is a misnomer. We have students all over the state,” Prince said.

The school’s model combines flexibility with structure, allowing students to complete lessons on their own schedule while also participating in live, teacher-led instruction.

“Their lessons are asynchronous, so they have access 24-7,” Prince said. “But we do hold synchronous lessons for our students.”

That structure allows students to move at their own pace while still maintaining regular interaction with teachers and classmates.

The approach has attracted a diverse student population, including athletes, performers and students who benefit from individualized pacing.

“The reasons that students attend our school are as diverse as our students are,” Prince said.

For younger students, the model relies heavily on family involvement. Parents or guardians, referred to as “learning coaches,” play a key role in supporting daily instruction at home.

“It’s really imperative that they have someone who’s working with them at home,” Prince said.

School leaders say students have multiple opportunities to connect. The school offers in-person field trips, clubs, and prom, as well asvirtual activities through its broader Connections Academy network.

“There are lots of opportunities for socialization within the school,” Prince said.

Students may also participate in athletics and other extracurricular activities through local schools, depending on district policies.

Academically, the school emphasizes college preparation and career readiness through honors, Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses.

The school has also expanded its College and Career Readiness offering, adding work-based learning opportunities and career-focused pathways.
For some students, the flexibility is the key advantage.

“We have a lot of students who are athletes and need a different way of doing school,” Prince said.

Others benefit from the ability to revisit lessons at their own pace.

“All of our synchronous lessons are recorded,” Prince said. “So if a student needs to go back to grab a concept, they can watch it again.”
Still, the model is not for everyone. Students must be self-motivated and able to work independently, with support from home and Lowcountry Connections Academy’s staff and teachers.

“Not every student is successful in a virtual environment, just as not every student is successful in a brick-and-mortar environment,” Prince said.

For families who can provide that structure, however, school staff say the model can be highly effective.

“We offer plenty of resources to support parents and caretakers, but family support of a student’s education is paramount,” Prince said.

With enrollment open, school officials say they are focused on expanding access while maintaining a supportive environment.

Lowcountry Connections Academy recently received a Culture of Excellence award from the Charter Institute at Erskine for achieving an Excellent School Climate rating across all grade levels.

“Being honored at Erskine’s Academic Showcase underscores the dedication of our students, staff, and teachers in fostering a strong school culture that transcends our virtual classrooms and brings our entire learning community together,” said Prince.
