Hintz, SOBA artists featured in exhibit

The Society of Bluffton Artists has opened a summer exhibition at Fair Winds Bar & Grill in Rose Hill Plantation, featuring a rotating collection of work by local artists and a special display honoring one of the organization’s founding members.

The exhibition opened this summer and will remain on display through Aug. 31 inside the Rose Hill golf clubhouse, where Fair Winds Bar & Grill is located.

Alongside artwork by SOBA members, the show includes works by the late Betty Thorpe Hintz, one of the nonprofit organization’s seven founding members and a longtime Rose Hill resident.

Hintz moved to Bluffton in 1986 after spending 33 years living overseas. According to SOBA, her artwork drew inspiration from both the Lowcountry landscape and her travels in Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa, Singapore, Bali, France and Italy.

“This exhibit feels especially meaningful because of Betty’s deep connection to both SOBA and Rose Hill,” Gloria Owens, SOBA marketing and tech team member and manager of the Rose Hill satellite gallery, said in a statement.

“Her family still lives in the community, and we’re honored to share her artwork in a place that was such an important part of her life.”

The exhibition also represents what SOBA described as a full-circle moment for the organization. Hintz’s family donated the featured artwork to SOBA, and proceeds from sales will support the organization’s mission of helping visual arts thrive in Bluffton.

Founded in 1991, the Society of Bluffton Artists is a nonprofit visual arts organization that supports local artists through exhibitions, educational opportunities and community programming.

All artwork in the exhibition is available for purchase.

Fair Winds Bar & Grill is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and offers lunch, brunch, dinner, drinks, live music, open mic nights and seasonal events.

The exhibition is one of several venues where SOBA artists display their work throughout the community while supporting the organization’s mission to promote visual arts in the Lowcountry.
