Until recently, the words closet and design have rarely been used in the same sentence. Over the past few years, there has been an increasing interest in closet functionality, and with good reason.

Your bedroom should be a place of refuge. It’s where you begin each new day and where you find peace at night, and by reconfiguring the design of your closet, you can turn a cluttered bedroom into a restful sanctuary.

Incorporating intelligent storage solutions in your closet can provide an array of benefits, overall making life more efficient and enjoyable. Clutter is stressful for the brain. It can be distracting, and research shows that it can affect one’s ability to focus. Alleviating clutter will allow you to manage your time more effectively and is a simple way to achieve freedom from chaos.

Whether you own a reach-in closet or a walk-in, subtle demarcations can help the space feel larger and more organized. Unlike other rooms in the home that require large investments, closet renovations can be economical.

Some popular yet affordable accessories that can be used to maximize closet space include freestanding shoe, belt, scarf, and tie racks; wall-mounted, full-length mirrors; nylon bins and open storage cubbies.

Exploit the often under-utilized space between the tops of clothing rods and a room’s ceiling with high-mounted elements. They’ll draw the eye upward while allowing you to take full advantage of limited storage.

For those seeking a more elaborate closet design, custom cabinetry, LED lighting and unique storage systems should be considered. Custom cabinetry, a permanent storage solution for your closet, allows you to truly customize the design and functionality of the space.

You can also choose from a variety of finishes and materials, allowing you to allocate the exact space needed for shoes, purses and all of your favorite articles.

Unique hanging mechanisms can also be used to maximize clothing storage and can be easily incorporated inside of custom cabinetry.

Two systems include spiral clothing racks and pull-down clothing rods. Spiral clothing racks are practical storage solutions for those hard-to-reach corners, while pull-down clothing rods eliminate the need for a step stool and bring the garments to you.

Additional storage systems to consider include tilt-out laundry baskets with removable hamper bags, valet rods, jewelry drawers, fold out ironing boards, and pullout, full-length mirrors.

Incorporating LED lighting will add a level of sophistication to your custom closet. Dark closets do not make for quick wardrobe choices, as some colors and textures show off their true glory in a bright setting.

Individual LEDs can be dimmed, resulting in a dynamic control of light, color and distribution, allowing light to wash over the closet. Take it a step further and include LED clothing rods, which offer a low-energy solution for illuminating hanging garments that are often hard to see. Simply open the door, and they’re on.

Finally, don’t be afraid to splurge on sumptuous materials and exuberant treatments. Give grandeur to your closet; after all, the master bedroom is a key room in any home, but it’s the master closet that helps make the space appear clean and organized.
