It’s time to push the “reset button.” A new year is just around the corner.
December is that “feel good” month. It’s like one social gathering after the next. Thanksgiving was late this year, so our party mindset is already off and running.
Who wants to be planning the next year of their life? That’s pretty heavy stuff, right? My guess is most will not, and will save those soon-to-be frazzled brain cells for the middle of January or later.
Not so fast!
We must be disciplined enough to create an outline of what our plan is for 2020. As the director of sales at one of the senior living communities on Hilton Head Island, I’m specifically talking to two different audiences: seniors (age 75-plus) and their children.
I’m recommending that seniors create a 10-year plan as to how they’re going to live, where they’re going to live and, based on financial resources and overall health status, what options are available to them.
Children of seniors can be incredibly helpful in this overall process. Very often, I spend as many hours with the kids as I do with their parents.
If the children take an active role in their parents’ lives, there’s no doubt they will be eager and willing to be a part of the process of finding the right spot. The idea is to make this the last major move.
It’s extremely important to do your research in finding the right community that will be perfect for mom and dad; but ultimately it’s the parents’ decision.
Seniors have many options when it comes to where they are going to live as they get older. Of course, individual overall health determines a number of options.
The services of in-home care companies allow seniors to stay in their home. Sometimes homes must be modified to make this happen, such as creating a bedroom on the first floor, or changing a tub-shower into a walk-in shower.
I believe it’s the socialization component that makes senior living communities a wise choice. Having friends to talk to and spend time with – be it at dinner, exercise class or Happy Hour – will make each day better for brain and body. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!
So, take a few minutes and create a senior living plan now, and start your due diligence in January. We want those senior years to be the best ever.
