Since it opened its doors just before Christmas 2014, Savannah’s The Grey has been no stranger to awards. Recognition and accolades have been coming in from all over America.
The eatery was named among Food and Wine Magazine’s Best New Restaurants in America. It was a finalist for a James Beard Award for design and architecture.
There have been many more, and now The Grey has been named among the best in the South by Southern Living magazine.
The honor comes as part of the publication’s annual list of “The South’s Best,” which, in addition to restaurants, includes a ranking of cities in the South as well as a number of other categories.
The Grey took second place in the South, trailing only the legendary Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.
Also named among the South’s best were Charleston’s Husk, Hominy Grill, and FIG.
The Grey is located in the building that once upon a time served as the Greyhound Bus terminal. In just over two years on Savannah’s MLK Jr. Boulevard downtown, The Grey and Executive Chef Mashama Bailey have earned a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the city. It also has become a great spot for a cocktail and light snacks in their Diner Bar, which was converted from the bus station’s snack bar.
The Grey is also one of the best restaurants in Savannah for a very reasonably priced lunch. Sunday suppers are always a hit, served family style every Sunday evening.
The history of the building has been told many times. Built in 1938, it was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Grey is without question a crown jewel in the Savannah restaurant scene and very much worth a visit.
Incidentally, worth mentioning because of its proximity, also on that Southern Living list was St. Simons Island’s Southern Soul Barbeque. It was named Best Barbecue in the South by the publication. Savannah was named second best city in the South, behind Charleston.
