Our minds influence the key activity of the brain, which then influences everything; perception, cognition, thoughts and feelings, personal relationships – they’re all a projection of you. – Deepak Chopra

Brain Boosters starts on Sept. 17. For those of you who are not familiar with this program at Memory Matters, Brain Boosters is a 10-week program offered three times a year.

I have written about this program so many times that I thought another Brain Boosters article would be redundant.

Yes, I could tell you about how important it is to keep your brain active at any age and that studies have shown that in doing so, a person could lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.

I could tell you that in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) trial, certified trainers provided 10 sessions of memory training, or speed-of-processing training, to healthy adults 65 and over, and the session improved the participants’ mental skills and the mental skills persisted for more than two years.

Or I could tell you a personal story about a woman who was in Brain Boosters at Memory Matters and called me today. The call was such perfect timing because I was just getting ready to write this article. Timing is everything.

Ann (not her real name) enrolled in Brain Boosters because she was having too many “senior moments.” She was worried that she could be developing Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

I administered a memory screening and she did not score well. I suggested she take the course. She did not want to make the 10-week commitment but knew that she should do something.

After the 10-week course, I again administered the mini-mental test. Her score was 10 points higher. Why?

She had learned how to focus better, she had learned tools to help with her short-term memory, and she was much more confident.

Ann is still reaping the benefits from the class more than two years later.

She said that almost daily she uses at least one of the memory techniques she learned and refers to her workbook often to refresh her skills.

Ann is getting ready to move to be near her family. She called to thank me for “making” her take the Brain Boosters course.

Look, we are all living longer. Why wouldn’t you want to have a healthy brain? What we offer at Memory Matters is unique. There are few places in the United States that offer such a comprehensive course.

My suggestion? Take the class. You will not regret it.
