• Memory Matters will host two Brain Boosters classes in July and August.

Brain Boosters 101, an introductory course with a broad approach to brain health, will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on four Mondays, July 16 to Aug. 6.

Brain Boosters 201, an advanced course on how the brain works, with bonus information on adopting sustainable brain-healthy strategies, will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on four Wednesdays, July 18 to Aug. 8.

The introductory course is strongly recommended before taking the second course.

Both courses will be held at Memory Matters, 117 William Hilton Parkway, on Hilton Head Island. Cost is $80 per course. To register, call 843-842-6688.

  • Jessica Bender has been named executive director of Mental Health America of Beaufort-Jasper, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults with severe and persistent mental illness.

Bender graduated in May with a Master’s Degree in professional counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. She began working with MHABJ last August as an intern.

The organization, located in Bluffton, offers a program called Island House, which provides comprehensive psychosocial rehabilitation services. The five-day-per-week program focuses on mental illness education and empowerment, living skills and communication skills. Funding for the program is heavily dependent on Medicaid.

  • Dr. Alan Barbieri and Dr. Frank Barbieri recently received diplomate board certifications through the American Sleep and Breathing Academy (ABSB).

Through their practice, 2 Sleep Well Again, with locations in the Lowcountry and Charleston area, these professionals are helping treat patients who are medically diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The diplomate status was earned after an independent board reviewed proof of 50 hours of continuing education in Dental Sleep Medicine within the past two years, along with submission of 12 cases treated successfully with oral appliance therapy within the past five years, and completion of the required diplomate exam.

The ABSB is an independent board, providing a diplomate designation to licensed dentists who treat sleep related breathing disorders.
