Dr. Lourens J. Willekes II, a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon, has joined Memorial Health University Physicians Heart Care in Savannah.
Dr. Willekes is specially trained to perform lung and chest surgery using conventional, robotic and thoracoscopic surgical procedures.
Willekes earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his general surgery residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey.
He did a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Albany Medical Center in New York. He is board certified in thoracic surgery.
Before moving to Savannah, Dr. Willekes was in private practice in Grand Rapids, Mich. He treats patients with breathing disorders, esophageal and lung cancer, rib disorders and fractures, thyroid goiters and other medical conditions of the chest.

The conference was presented by the Medical University of South Carolina. The main focus of the event was eczema and the therapeutic revolution in dermatology with the interaction of actual patients and teaching physicians.
