If you’ve been following Barin’s courageous story of heartbreak and hope, it will come as no surprise that this determined Palmetto Animal League dog is getting ready to take his next steps into a new life. If this is your first time hearing about Barin, here’s a recap.

Barin was hit by a car. His owners told authorities they did not have the money to take him to a vet, so he was tied up outside – with two broken legs – for months on end.

Our vets at the PAL Community Clinic can’t begin to imagine the pain he must’ve endured as his broken bones healed improperly, leaving him with two badly deformed front legs. Since being hit, Barin’s only way to move around has been crawling on his twisted and mangled limbs.

Until now!

Barin recently went on an exciting road trip to Virginia to get fitted for a pair of custom-made leg orthotics to help him walk upright again. Barin’s orthotics are being designed by Derrick Campana, director of orthotics at Animal Ortho Care in Sterling, Va.

Campana calls them “blades,” as they are similar to the “running legs” worn by human amputees.

After a brief meet-and-greet, Barin lay patiently as Derrick, who also has created orthotics for elephants in Africa, took molds of his legs.

Barin also got to meet Schon Groff of Phoenix Design Solutions, who will create padded leggings to relieve the pressure on his bones when he’s not wearing his blades.

After being examined, measured and, of course, receiving lots of belly rubs from the specialists, Barin got to play in the snow. It was a fun day for an extraordinary dog who, before being rescued by Palmetto Animal League, was in immediate danger of being euthanized.

Thanks to dozens of PAL supporters who made compassionate donations to help fund Barin’s care, his future is looking bright!

There is just one more thing Barin longs for, and that’s a home of his own. While he is greatly loved and cared for at the PAL Adoption Center, he is often lonely and bored.

Barin’s greatest wish is to find a special human to roll around and play with, someone who enjoys a relaxing, low-key lifestyle. Barin will never be an agile dog who moves around for long periods of time, but he has a lot of love to give.
