When asking the general public why people would see a chiropractor, perhaps a vast majority of the responses would be something to do with neck pain, back pain or auto accidents.
Yes, they would be correct with those responses, but there is a huge misconception that chiropractic is beneficial only for those suffering back pain.
This could not be more wrong. People of all ages – even pregnant women – can benefit from chiropractic care.
A pregnant woman’s body goes through many changes to accommodate a growing baby and prepare for birth. Several changes in the mother’s body might create unfavorable situations.
But the great news is that chiropractic care is very safe for pregnant women so they can continue with care throughout pregnancy. Chiropractic care before, during and after pregnancy can help to relieve or even eliminate some unpleasant experiences that might arise.
- Relieve aches and pains. During pregnancy, aches and pains result from changes in a woman’s body. As the baby grows, the mother’s center of gravity shifts and this places stress on the low back. In addition, the woman’s abdomen protrudes forward creating an increased curve in the low back (lumbar lordosis).
- Prevent and correct joint dysfunction. Aches and pains also result from joint dysfunction. A pregnant woman’s body releases hormones to create laxity in the ligaments and joints. This laxity makes it easier for joints to misalign, creating dysfunction and therefore pain.
- Keeping joints properly aligned in the spine and pelvis can help reduce pain during pregnancy, as well as after.
In some cases, pain is experienced after delivery as the mother’s body changes back to the pre-pregnancy state.
- Prevent a potential Cesarean section. When joints are misaligned, especially those in the pelvis, it is difficult for the baby to get into the proper position for birth because he or she might not have enough room to move around.
This improper positioning is known as a breech presentation and oftentimes results in an unwanted Cesarean section. Keeping the pelvis in proper alignment during pregnancy will help the baby assume the proper positioning for delivery, thus allowing an easier, safer delivery for mother and baby.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is very gentle and safe. Chiropractors utilize special tables or pillows to allow for comfortable positioning of the mother during her adjustments. Keeping a mother’s body in proper alignment before and during pregnancy will help mother and baby adapt more easily throughout the pregnancy, and will help to reduce low back pain and labor times. A more pleasant pregnancy means a happy, stress-free mother and baby.
