The Hilton Head Island Biking Ambassador Program is seeking volunteers who enjoy cycling to join the ranks of helpers along the island’s many leisure pathways.
The Biking Ambassador Program was begun six years ago with the mission of making the island more bike-friendly and to foster safety for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists alike. Ambassadors’ duties include giving directions and passing out maps and safety flyers and reporting problems to the proper authorities.
Additional volunteers are needed to expand and enhance the program. Cyclists who are interested in becoming Ambassadors are required to attend one of two training sessions, to be held May 9 and May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palmetto Dunes Fire Station No. 6.
Prior to the summer season, Ambassadors register online for two-hour patrols on either Sunday or Monday on trails along major highways. A typical Ambassador will complete from 12 to 24 hours of patrols during the peak visitor season.
In addition, many Ambassadors patrol during the off season at times and trails convenient for them.
Ambassadors provide their own bicycles and helmets, but are issued official vests and supplies at the training sessions.
