It’s estimated that more than 30 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, the most common type of joint problem in older adults. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and a loss of ability.
“Many people start noticing joint pain in their 40s, but it’s not necessarily enough to slow them down,” said Beaufort Memorial physical therapist and orthopaedic care coordinator Andrea Sadler. “But by the time they reach their 50s and 60s, the pain is often bad enough to seek medical attention.”
Those with joint pain can join Sadler for a free joint pain class Jan. 27 to learn about available solutions. The hour-long class will be held at 1 p.m. at Beaufort Memorial Bluffton Medical Services, 11 Arley Way in Westbury Park.
Sadler will discuss common causes of joint pain, how early diagnosis can solve pain issues, effective non-surgical treatments for joint pain and the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures. She will also explain how appropriate options – from in-home exercises and medical management to physical therapy and surgery – can be personalized for your specific needs.
“A healthy diet can slow the progression of osteoarthritis,” said Sadler. “Low-impact exercises like walking, riding a bicycle, and swimming can be helpful as well.”
The seminar is free, but registration is required as space is limited. To learn more or make a reservation visit BeaufortMemorial.org/JointPainClass or call 843-522-5585.
