Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

An editorial in the Jan. 3 Hilton Head Sun by Councilman Dan Wood of Bluffton needs to be reviewed on many points.

First, he compliments the municipal councils for banning the flimsy plastic bags, then derails "the big box stores" for changing to a thicker reusable plastic bag. He ignores the fact that, according to the American Forest and Paper Association, in 1999 the U.S. alone used 10 billion paper grocery bags, which adds up to a lot of trees, plus a lot of water and chemicals to process the paper.

He has no data that reusable plastic bags are not better.

Second, if it was a loophole, it was he and his colleagues who created it. The blame is not on the box stores but on him.

Finally, and worse, he states that the box stores "are not our neighbors in any real sense." I would ask him to go to one and find out who the shoppers are and who the employees are! They are our neighbors, and they should remember that Dan Wood does not consider them such in the next election.

To the Editor:

The Seahawk Support Circle wishes to extend a huge thank you to our community, parents and teachers who donated, volunteered and supported our Holiday Bag project in 2018.

Due to the amount of monetary donations, gift card donations, and other donated items, we were able to send more than 120 large bags, filled to the brim, home with students in need at Hilton Head Island High School.

Special thanks to Island Lutheran Church, May River Dermatology, James Wedgeworth Charter One Realty, and the HHIHS PTSO for their continued support.

The Seahawk Support Circle provides assistance to students of Hilton Head Island High School who are struggling due to homelessness, loss of parent or guardian, illness, financial and other crisis issues.
