Activities have been planned for a long weekend of celebration in honor of the life of Dr. Marin Luther King.
In a year marked by hate crimes and divisions, his message takes on special meaning and importance. Each event will draw us together to embrace our diversity, in unity, peace, prayer, song and joyfulness.
On Jan. 17, a community worship service will be held at 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 829 William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island.
A special Sabbath service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at Congregation Beth Yam, 4501 Meeting St. The service will feature Lavon Stevens, the CBY choir and student cantor Olivia Brodsky.
On Jan. 19, a gala dinner dance will take place at Pinckney Hall in Sun City. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. Tickets, sold in advance, are $65 per person. Attire is black tie optional.
The annual Martin Luther King Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 21, originating at Hilton Head Island High School, 70 Wilborn Road. After the parade, a free community lunch will be held, with speakers and awards.
