  • Christine Cassidy, owner of local Hilton Head Island firm Cassidy CPA, attended the 37th annual New York University Institute on State & Local Taxation Conference Dec. 17-18 in New York City.

The conference hosted luminaries and experts from many states discussing major tax reforms and questions affecting state and local taxation.

Cassidy learned about important taxation changes anticipated at local and state level for the 2018 tax season. Many states, including South Carolina, are unclear as to the changes caused by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) or if they want to conform. Additionally, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on South Dakota vs. Wayfair has vastly changed sales and income tax laws for all states.

Practitioners' and professional organizations are requesting the state returns be given a due date much later than the federal returns but nothing has been decided. Until all of this is resolved, tax software companies cannot write the software to reflect the final decisions.

Cassidy has been a practicing accounting on Hilton Head Island since 1996 and founded her own firm in 2000. For more information, visit CassidyCPA.net.

  • Hilton Head Public Service District (PSD) earned the Wastewater System of the Year award from the South Carolina Rural Water Association (SCRWA) for 2018.

The PSD was recognized for several advancements, including construction of two regional sewer lift stations using S.C. Clean Water Revolving Fund financing of $1.5 million over 20 years; constructing 10 miles of sewer mains in previously unserved areas, in a partnership involving $10 million from the Town of Hilton Head Island and a $3 million charitable campaign from the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry's Project SAFE (Sewer Access for Everyone) fund; and implementing dissolved-oxygen based aeration to save energy during the wastewater treatment process.

The SCRWA Awards of Excellence selections were based on nominations from industry personnel.
